Magewell Director Mini & Director One — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Director Mini and Director One all-in-one live production switchers — from input sources and streaming platforms to batteries, recording and NDI.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Director Mini is the compact, portable model with a 5.44" AMOLED touchscreen and NP-F battery support — ideal for mobile, solo-operator production. The Director One has a larger 7" AMOLED display with 800-nit brightness (better for outdoor use), a built-in 4G modem with WiFi and 4G antennas, and supports ISO recording. The Director One is better suited to fixed installs and demanding live events; the Mini is better for on-the-go production.

Both support two HDMI inputs and two USB-A (UVC) inputs for cameras or capture devices. On top of these four physical inputs, you can add up to three live IP sources simultaneously — including SRT streams, RTMP pull streams, and NDI|HX sources. You can also use a connected smartphone as a camera source, and import media files (MP4, images, audio) as additional sources.

Yes. Both Director Mini and Director One can stream to up to four destinations simultaneously (as of firmware 3.0). This includes YouTube, Facebook Live, Twitch, or any custom RTMP/SRT endpoint. You can stream to multiple platforms at the same time without any additional hardware or subscriptions.

Yes. The Director Mini can record locally to an SD card or USB storage simultaneously with streaming. It records in H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) format. The Director One additionally supports ISO recording — recording two independent source signals simultaneously, which is useful for post-production editing of live events.

Both Director Mini and Director One support NDI|HX (including HX2 and HX3) as an IP source input. They do not support Full NDI (NDI High Bandwidth) as an input. For output, NDI|HX3 can be streamed as one of the streaming destinations. If you need to work with Full NDI sources, a Pro Convert or Ultra Encode device would be more appropriate.

Yes. The Director Mini supports two hot-swappable NP-F type batteries (not included). When one battery depletes during a show, the device automatically switches to the other without interruption. When fully charged batteries are inserted, the Director Mini can operate entirely without mains power — ideal for outdoor events, sports coverage, and field production.

Both have a USB-C video output (which works with a USB-C to HDMI adapter) for connecting an external display. The Director One also has a dedicated HDMI output. Both can display a programme output or a multiview monitor showing all sources.

Yes. The Director Utility app (available for iOS and Android) connects over Wi-Fi or the local network and provides remote control of input switching, audio mixing, graphics, scoreboard management, and configuration. The Director One also supports third-party shortcut keyboards connected directly via USB for streamlined production control.

Yes. Both Director Mini and Director One support chroma keying (green screen removal) as a scene composition tool. You can overlay a presenter against a virtual background using any of the available input sources.

Both Directors support on-screen graphics including lower thirds, titles, scoreboards (including sport-specific templates like football and tennis), countdown timers, images, and logos. Graphics can be created and edited within the device interface or via the Director Utility app. Telestration (drawing on the screen) is also supported for sports analysis.

No. The Director Mini does not support USB Ethernet adapters for a second wired network connection. It has a single built-in Ethernet port. The Director One has built-in 4G and Wi-Fi in addition to its wired Ethernet, giving it three independent network paths.

Both Director Mini and Director One encode up to 1080p60 at bitrates up to 30Mbps. The Director One supports H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) encoding codecs. 4K encoding is not supported on either model — sources above 1080p are automatically downscaled for encoding.
