Connect the HDMI source directly to a display to confirm it is outputting video. If the display shows no signal, the problem is with the source, not the capture device.
Magewell USB Capture devices require USB 3.0. Plugging into a USB 2.0 port will result in no capture or very poor quality. USB 3.0 ports are typically marked in blue or labelled SS. Try a different port.
HDCP prevents capture of protected content. Blu-ray players, Netflix, and some streaming sticks output HDCP-protected signals that cannot be captured. Cameras, computers, game consoles (in most modes), and AV equipment do not use HDCP.
If the source is outputting a resolution your capture software does not support, it may show black. In OBS, set the capture source resolution to Custom and match exactly to the source output. Check the Magewell USB Capture Utility to see what resolution the device is detecting.
Download the free Magewell USB Capture Utility from magewell.com/downloads. Open it and select your device. If the Utility shows the signal correctly, the problem is with your capture software configuration, not the device.

The most common causes are: wrong input selected in your capture software, a cable that doesn't support the resolution being output, HDCP-protected content (which cannot be captured), or the source device being in sleep mode. Check each in turn.
No. HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a DRM standard that prevents capture of protected content such as Blu-ray, streaming services and some games consoles. This is by design and a legal requirement. Use a non-HDCP source for capture.
First check the cable — not all HDMI cables support 4K or high frame rates. Try a known-good cable. Then check your source device's output settings match a resolution your capture card supports. Finally, try a different USB/PCIe slot if applicable.
Work through these steps: 1) Verify the source is outputting video and set to HDMI/SDI output. 2) Try a different cable. 3) Check the EDID setting matches the source output resolution. 4) Use the Magewell Capture Utility to check raw signal detection status. 5) Test with a known-good source to isolate the issue.
A black screen with signal detected usually means HDCP-protected content (Blu-ray, Netflix, Pay TV). HDCP prevents capture of protected content by design. If the source is not protected content, check the HDMI cable supports the resolution being output and verify colour format settings in the Capture Utility.
Yes. HDMI sources that enforce HDCP will not output a capturable signal to any capture device. This affects Blu-ray players and set-top boxes when playing protected content. Cameras, laptops, and game consoles typically do not enforce HDCP on their own content.
Windows updates can reset USB device drivers. Open Device Manager and uninstall the Magewell device entry (including driver files), then reinstall the latest driver from forefrontimaging.com/software.php. Also check that USB Selective Suspend is disabled for the port in Power Management settings.
