Capture · Record · Stream · Encode · DecodeGeneric HDMI capture dongles cost a fraction of the price of a Magewell unit. The limits show when the picture matters. Many of them are USB 2.0 devices, and USB 2.0 cannot carry uncompressed 1080p video at 60 frames per second. They have to compress the picture before sending it, which costs detail and colour accuracy.
A Magewell USB Capture device sends uncompressed video to the computer over USB 3.0, in formats such as YUY2 and RGB24. Scaling, de-interlacing, colour conversion and frame rate conversion are done inside the device, not on the host PC, which leaves the computer free for your streaming or meeting software. Installation is driver-free, and the range supports Windows, Linux, macOS and Chrome OS.
Each device takes its power from the USB port, so there is no power supply to fail or forget. An LED shows whether the input is locked to the source, so you can see a cabling fault at a glance. On the HDMI models, a custom EDID setting lets you control what the source is told to send.
Your software reaches the device through the operating system’s standard capture interfaces. Magewell’s compatible software list includes Zoom Rooms, Microsoft Teams, OBS Studio, XSplit, VLC, GStreamer and QuickTime Player, along with other software that uses the standard DirectShow, V4L2 or AVCaptureSession interfaces.
An entry USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 costs more than a generic dongle. In return you get uncompressed 1080p at 60 frames per second, processing in the device, support for four operating systems and a UK distributor to call. The 2 year manufacturer warranty backs that up. Where the capture matters, such as a paid event or a lecture recording, that is the safer purchase.
