Recording and Streaming Simultaneously with Ultra Stream

Published: 2024-01-15
Magewell Recording and Streaming Simultaneously with Ultra Stream

Three Simultaneous Outputs

Yes: the Ultra Stream HDMI and Ultra Stream SDI record and stream at the same time. Each can record to three places at once: its 32 GB of internal storage, a connected USB flash drive and a paired mobile device. While it records, it can also stream live to up to two destinations. Everything comes from the same source signal, so you keep a copy of the event even if the internet connection drops part-way through.

Starting Each Operation

You can start and stop recording and streaming in three ways: with the buttons on the device, in the Ultra Stream smartphone app or in the Web UI in a browser. Set up at least one streaming destination before you go live. Facebook, Twitch and YouTube are supported directly, and any other RTMP or RTMPS server can be added by its address.

Bitrate and Stream Limits

The main stream encodes up to 1920x1080 at 60 frames per second in H.264 or H.265, at up to 8 Mbps. The Ultra Stream can send to two RTMP servers at once, but at the maximum 8 Mbps only one RTMP or RTSP stream can be sent. If you want two destinations, choose a lower bitrate. Recordings are saved as MP4 or MOV files.

RTMPS Support

RTMPS, which is RTMP over an encrypted TLS connection, is supported alongside RTMP and RTSP. The Ultra Stream does not support SRT; for SRT or NDI, look at the Ultra Encode range.

Power and Reliability

Use the power adapter supplied with the unit. The Ultra Stream needs DC 5 V at 2 A and draws up to about 9.6 W (HDMI model), which is more than many computer USB ports provide.
