A leading UK business school needed to modernise an ageing AV routing system across a multi-room teaching estate. The legacy SDI matrix limited room-to-room signal sharing and made it difficult to add new sources or destinations without recabling. Hybrid teaching had also become a permanent requirement, with sessions routinely recorded, streamed and replayed.
An NDI-based infrastructure offered three advantages for this environment: it ran on existing campus network hardware, it scaled without proprietary fabric switches, and it allowed any source to be sent to any destination, including remote participants on Zoom or Teams.
Camera positions were equipped with Pro Convert HDMI Plus units to encode camera feeds into full-bandwidth NDI. Display destinations used Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI decoders. For lectures recorded directly to a workstation, Pro Convert IP to USB bridged the NDI network back into the recording PC as a standard USB camera input.
NDI sources were managed through Magewell Control Hub. The teaching team used a mix of OBS Studio for ad-hoc recording and a custom-built lecture-capture system that consumed NDI streams directly.
Any camera in any room can now be routed to any display, recording or stream. Adding a new room is a matter of installing a single Pro Convert device and adding it to the Control Hub inventory. No new cabling required.
