Meeting-room PCs and conferencing apps are built around webcams rather than NDI. If you want a room's NDI camera, a production feed or a stream from another site to show up in a call, the Pro Convert IP to USB bridges the gap. It takes one video stream from the network and hands it to a computer over USB. To the computer it looks like a USB camera, so an NDI, NDI HX or streaming source can be picked as the camera in video-conferencing or production software. In effect it is an NDI decoder with a USB output, for any application that already understands a webcam.
What goes in
One stream at a time, arriving on the unit’s own Gigabit Ethernet socket, at up to 1920×1080 at 60 frames per second:
- NDI. NDI High Bandwidth (the full-quality version) and the compressed NDI HX2 and HX3 versions, with support for NDI 6.2.
- Streaming protocols. RTMP, RTSP, RTP, UDP, SRT and HTTP, so you can bring in feeds from beyond the local network as well as NDI sources.
- Codecs. SpeedHQ, H.264 and H.265.
It is an HD device, built for sources up to 1080p60. HLS and first-generation NDI HX streams are outside its range, so plan around the protocols above.
What your computer sees
- Video over USB. A UVC video device. UVC is the standard that webcams use, which is why conferencing and production software can select it as a camera. Uncompressed output (YUY2 or NV12) goes up to 1080p60, and MJPEG up to 1080p30. Lower resolutions down to 640×480 are also offered, so you can match whatever the software asks for.
- Audio over USB. A UAC audio device, the matching standard for USB sound: two channels, 16-bit, 48 kHz. The stream's sound arrives with the picture on the same cable.
- Connection. USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) on a Type-C socket.
Powered by the computer
- Powered from USB. The unit takes 5 V at up to 1 A from the USB connection, about 3.8 W at most, so the computer powers it and there is no separate power supply to carry.
- Two cables. A network cable brings the stream to the unit, and a USB cable runs from the unit to the computer. The Ethernet port carries the stream only; power comes over USB rather than PoE.
- Size. 98.1 × 56.78 × 18 mm, small enough for a laptop bag, which suits work on the road.
Where it earns its place
- NDI cameras in meetings. A room’s NDI camera or a production feed can be chosen as the camera in a call without extra NDI software on the computer. That keeps your room PC build as it is.
- Remote feeds. An SRT or RTMP stream from another site can be brought into software the same way, which lets you add a remote contributor to a call or a mix.
- Software. Compatible with Zoom Rooms, Microsoft Teams, VLC, OBS Studio, XSplit, QuickTime Player and vMix, so it fits both meeting rooms and production desks.
- Operating systems. Windows 10, 11 and Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, Linux (x86, x64 and ARM), and macOS.
Setting it up
- A Web UI is used to choose the source stream, change settings and update firmware.
- Units can be registered with Magewell Control Hub for central management, and HTTP APIs are provided, which lets you look after many rooms from one place.
Where it sits in the range
