Once video is on the network, somebody still has to get it onto the screens: the monitors in a gallery, the televisions in a foyer, the projector in a hall. For AV teams with HD sources and a lot of displays, the Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI Module is the NDI decoder that does it from the equipment room. It takes one video stream from the network and turns it into an HDMI signal for a monitor, television, projector or video wall processor. It is a slide-in module for the Magewell Modator 2U chassis, so a rack of them can feed every screen in a building from one place.
HD streams on any screen, including 4K
The module decodes streams of up to 2Kp60, which in practice means sources up to about 1080p at 60 frames per second. Its HDMI socket can output up to 4096×2160 at 60 frames per second. So a 1080p stream can be scaled up to fill a 4K screen, and you can use whatever display is already on the wall. Scaling fits the picture to the display, with the detail of the original stream. For 4K sources, choose the Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI 4K Module, which decodes up to 4Kp60.
What goes in
- From the network. One stream of up to 2Kp60: NDI High Bandwidth, NDI HX, NDI HX2 and NDI HX3, plus H.264 and H.265 streams over RTSP, HTTP, HLS, RTMP (pull or push), MPEG-TS over UDP, SRT or RTP, and TVU. That breadth lets you point it at a camera, a signage stream or a remote feed.
- NDI version. NDI 6.3 is supported, and the module can discover NDI devices across network segments, which helps when sources and screens sit on different parts of the network.
What comes out
- HDMI. One HDMI 2.0 output, up to 4096×2160 at 60 frames per second, 4:4:4, 8-bit, which suits HD and 4K displays alike.
- Audio. 8 channels at 48 kHz, embedded in the HDMI output, so there is no separate audio cable to run to the display.
- Picture controls. Image flip for inverted projector installations, and safe area controls. A ceiling-hung projector shows the picture the right way up without extra hardware.
- USB. A USB Type-A 3.0 port for connecting peripherals.
- Delay. Latency is very low.
How it fits in the chassis
- Powered by the chassis. The module slides into a slot of the Modator 2U chassis, which holds up to ten modules and supplies their power. You look after one rack instead of a decoder and power adapter behind every screen. Order the chassis with it if you are starting a new rack.
- Hot-swappable. It connects to the chassis through its Modator interface and can be swapped while the rack is running, so the other screens stay on.
- Its own network socket. The module has its own Gigabit Ethernet port (RJ45), as well as a USB Type-C port for configuration.
- Power and size. It draws at most 4.3 W, inside the chassis limit of 20 W per slot. It measures 184.4 × 30.0 × 81.5 mm and weighs about 290 g.
Setting it up
- Configure it from wherever is handiest: the touch screen on the Modator chassis, the Web GUI in a browser, or Magewell Control Hub for managing many devices from one place.
- HTTP-based APIs are provided for custom integration, so your control system can drive it.
