About this product

An equipment room that needs several converters or encoders soon fills with small boxes, each with its own power adapter and its own place on a shelf. The Modator 2U is for integrators and broadcast engineers who want that tidied into a rack. It is the rack chassis at the heart of the Magewell Modator system. It holds, powers and monitors up to ten Modator modules, each of which is a converter, decoder or streaming encoder in a slide-in form. The point is density: ten devices in two rack units, with one pair of power supplies instead of ten separate adapters. It gives an equipment room a neat, serviceable home for all its conversion and streaming.

Ten modules, swapped while it runs

Ten. The chassis has 10 Modator slots, and every one supports hot swap, which means a module can be fitted or removed while the chassis stays running. You can add a channel or replace a module while the others carry on working. You can mix and match module types in one chassis, so the same rack can encode, decode and stream.

Which modules fit

There are currently nine modules for the chassis:

• Decoders (network stream to video): Pro Convert for NDI to AIO Module, Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI Module, Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI 4K Module and the Pro Convert IP to AIO 4K Module.
• NDI encoders (video to NDI): Pro Convert HDMI Plus Module, Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus Module and Pro Convert 12G SDI 4K Plus Module.
• Streaming encoders: Ultra Encode SDI Plus Module and Ultra Encode HDMI Plus Module.

Choose the modules to suit your sources and displays and order them alongside the chassis. The chassis arrives with blank panels over the slots, ready for whichever modules you fit, so unused slots stay covered until you need them.

Power you can service

• Two power supplies. Hot-swappable dual power supply modules provide safety and redundancy. Two mains leads are in the box, so you can feed each supply from its own socket.
• Mains input. AC 100 to 240 V, 7 to 3.5 A, 50 or 60 Hz.
• Power budget. The chassis draws at most 200 W, and each slot supplies up to 20 W. That covers every module on our site with room to spare, the highest drawing 14.42 W, which saves you working out a power budget slot by slot.
• Running continuously. The dual power supplies and optimised heat dissipation are designed for 24/7 operation.

Touch screen, web interface and network

• Touch screen. A 91 × 81 mm touch screen on the chassis. Use it to turn the chassis on or off, view the status of the chassis and each installed module, and configure network settings. You can do all of that standing at the rack, without a laptop.
• Web interface. A browser-based interface shows information about the chassis and the modules, so you can check on them from your desk.
• APIs. HTTP-based APIs are provided for custom integration.
• Chassis ports. One Gigabit Ethernet port (RJ45) and one USB Type-C port, both for configuration.
• Module network ports. Each module has its own Gigabit Ethernet socket. Connect each one to your network switch, so allow a switch port per module when planning the rack.

Size and environment

The chassis measures 482 × 275 × 88 mm and weighs about 5.6 kg with ten blank panels fitted. Operating temperature is 0 to 50°C. In the box are the chassis, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, two power cords and four installation screws.

Where it earns its place

Each module is also offered in a standalone form of the same specification. For one or two devices, a standalone unit is simpler. The chassis comes into its own when you need several in one rack, and it leaves room to add more later.
